Which ‘Tales’ Game Will Come To Switch Next?

Remastering “Tales of Phantasia”

When it comes to re-releases, no game has seen more iterations than “Tales of Phantasia.” From the Super Famicom to PS1, GBA, PSP, and even cell phones in Japan, it has a rich history. Despite this, I believe that a remaster of this game is long overdue.

While the GBA and iOS versions were the only official English releases, the latter being marred by microtransactions and online connectivity requirements leading to its inevitable shutdown in 2014, these versions fall short of providing the ideal gameplay experience.

Nevertheless, the core of “Tales of Phantasia” stands out. With a narrative focused on time travel and environmentalism, a well-crafted antagonist, and character designs by Kosuke Fujishima that put a unique twist on traditional RPG classes, the game has a charm that is hard to ignore.

While combat may feel basic in the earlier versions, later iterations like those on the PS1 and PSP bring significant improvements, including full voice acting. Fans of “Star Ocean: First Departure R” will find a similar gameplay style in these enhanced versions.

Given the upcoming 30th anniversary of the game, it only makes sense for the West to receive a high-quality remaster of “Tales of Phantasia” soon. Perhaps Bandai Namco could collaborate with the creators of fan translations to ensure a faithful adaptation.

The Classic “Tales of Eternia”

Following the success of “Tales of Phantasia,” the series transitioned to the PlayStation era, with titles like “Tales of Symphonia” making waves. Among these, “Tales of Eternia,” also known as “Tales of Destiny II” (unrelated to the Japan-exclusive “Tales of Destiny 2”), remains a standout entry.

Though both PS1 games would benefit from remasters, the original “Tales of Destiny” lacks in gameplay compared to its PS2 Director’s Cut remake. On the other hand, “Tales of Eternia” shines as the best 2D Tales game, offering seamless gameplay even 25 years after its initial release.

Boasting excellent combat mechanics that set a precedent for future 2D games in the series, a charming cast, captivating storytelling, and captivating music by Motoi Sakuraba, “Tales of Eternia” remains a timeless favorite and a prime candidate for a Switch remaster.

While a remaster of “Tales of Destiny” is also desirable due to its rarity and high market value, “Tales of Eternia” offers a more accessible and enjoyable gameplay experience, especially with modern enhancements like updated skit portraits, streamlined encounters, and fast travel options.

Unleashing the Epic “Tales of the Abyss”

Looking for a captivating story-driven RPG experience? “Tales of the Abyss” stands out as a top choice. With a mature narrative, expansive world, and innovative 3D battle system, it is undoubtedly one of the series’ best.

While the game may suffer from pacing issues and backtracking in the later stages, its core narrative exploring themes of free will, redemption, and individuality remains poignant. The character development, especially with the protagonist, Luke, undergoing remarkable growth, adds depth to the storytelling.

Despite potential dated elements by current standards and limited accessibility to the 3DS version for certain regions, “Tales of the Abyss” continues to be a fan favorite. The possibility of a remaster seems promising, especially with recent success in reviving fan-favorite titles like “Vesperia” and “Graces” on the Switch.

Considering its popularity, a remaster of “Tales of the Abyss” could be a lucrative venture for Bandai Namco, catering to both nostalgic fans and new audiences.

Revisiting “Tales of Xillia” & “Tales of Xillia 2”

Among the featured titles, “Tales of Xillia” and its sequel hold high potential for upcoming console releases, possibly making their debut on Switch (or its successor).

Being part of the main series, a bundled release of “Tales of Xillia 1 & 2” would be a strategic move by Bandai Namco. Although the company had previously skipped bundling titles like “Tales of Symphonia” and “Dawn of the New World” on Switch, the cohesive storyline between Xillia installments justifies a joint remaster.

“Tales of Xillia 1” and “Xillia 2” together offer an enhanced combat system based on Tech Points, open zones, expanded crafting systems, and improved exploration mechanics. This advancement in gameplay signifies a significant evolution within the series’ framework.

Given the fan demand and the series’ progression over the years, a remastered release of “Tales of Xillia” is highly anticipated, with recent retail listings hinting at a possible announcement in the near future.

The Epic Saga of “Tales of Arise”

Although a somewhat ambitious addition to the lineup, “Tales of Arise” remains a standout title for its critical and commercial success. Considering its acclaim, a port to modern consoles, excluding the Switch, would be a missed opportunity.

Offering revolutionary battle mechanics and enhanced gameplay features, “Tales of Arise” introduces a fresh combat system with dynamic 3D movement, shared healing resources, seamless character swapping, and diversified playstyles, making it a fan-favorite among RPG enthusiasts.

In addition to its improved combat, “Tales of Arise” boasts polished visuals, dynamic character skits, and a modernized presentation that blends classic elements with contemporary design aspects. While it may not align entirely with traditional Tales titles, the game captures the essence of the series while forging a new path forward.

Despite receiving follow-up DLC with “Beyond the Dawn” in 2023, it was less well-received. However, a potential bundled release with the main game could smooth over any lingering issues. The transition to a Switch port for “Tales of Arise” could be a win-win for both fans and Bandai Namco.
