After It Takes Two Success, Hazelight Announces Split Fiction
Following the massive success of It Takes Two, developer Hazelight is gearing up to release a new game titled Split Fiction in March. This upcoming game follows the story of characters Mio and Zoe as they encounter a unique machine that takes ideas from writers without compensating them. With the growing concerns about AI advancements affecting various industries, including the video game sector, Hazelight’s founder Josef Fares recently shared his thoughts on AI in a candid interview.
“It’s both intimidating and thrilling,” Fares told VGC. “I firmly believe that whenever new technology emerges, it’s crucial to collaborate with it rather than resist it.”
Fares emphasized the importance of the video game industry adapting to AI technologies and embracing them rather than shying away from them.
“We need to evolve and incorporate AI into our processes,” he said. “It’s essential for improving the quality of games. While some may fear potential job displacements, this is a common concern with any new technology.”

Despite concerns surrounding AI, a recent study revealed that a significant number of game developers currently utilize AI in their workflows. Electronic Arts anticipates AI may lead to short-term job losses but ultimately result in more job opportunities. Take-Two’s CEO, Strauss Zelnick, expressed skepticism about AI’s learning capabilities and affirmed the necessity of human involvement in game development alongside AI.
Fares remains optimistic about the impact of AI, acknowledging both its positive and negative implications. He acknowledged the sensitivity of the subject but stressed the importance of addressing it.
“We cannot ignore the potential impact of AI. I foresee AI making a more profound impact on the world than the internet did, eventually. It may take time before we fully integrate AI into our development process, but it’s an inevitable progression,” he remarked.
Fares is known for his outspoken nature, famously flipping off the camera and exclaiming “F**k the Oscars!” at The Game Awards in the past.
Currently, video game performers are embroiled in a strike, with AI playing a significant role in the negotiations. Renowned voice actor Jennifer Hale described AI as an “existential” issue concerning the future of video game performances, potentially prolonging the strike.
