The 28th annual DICE Awards took place on Thursday, honoring the best in the gaming industry. Astro Bot stole the show by winning five awards, including the coveted Game of the Year title. Other notable winners of the evening were Helldivers 2, Balatro, and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle Shines Despite Missed Game Awards Opportunity
One of the most anticipated moments of the DICE Awards was to see how Indiana Jones and the Great Circle would fare, especially after missing the Game Awards deadline. The game did not disappoint, securing wins in categories like Adventure Game of the Year, Outstanding Achievement in Story, and Outstanding Achievement in Character for Dr. Henry “Indiana” Jones. This success at the DICE Awards further solidified the belief that Great Circle could have been a strong contender at the Game Awards had it been eligible.
Sony Dominates the Night with Multiple Wins
In addition to winning Game of the Year, Astro Bot also took home awards for animation, technical achievement, game design, and Family Game of the Year. Sony’s Helldivers 2 also had a successful evening, winning in categories like music, audio design, Action Game of the Year, and Online Game of the Year. Overall, Sony claimed 9 out of the 23 awards presented at the ceremony.
Balatro and Animal Well Triumph as Indie Favorites
Balatro emerged as the prominent indie game winner of the night, securing victories in categories like Strategy/Simulation Game of the Year, Mobile Game of the Year, and Outstanding Achievement for an Independent Game. Additionally, Animal Well was recognized with the award for Outstanding Achievement in Game Direction.
The DICE Awards vs. The Game Awards
While the Game Awards rely on votes from game critics and the public, the DICE Awards are presented by the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences, resembling the Oscars in the film industry. Despite the different voting processes, both ceremonies often align in their choices, especially when it comes to Game of the Year selections.
