Stephen King says he isn’t writing for Mike Flanagan’s Dark Tower

Stephen King’s Involvement in Dark Tower Series

Stephen King clarified that he is not writing for Mike Flanagan’s highly anticipated Dark Tower series, debunking earlier reports from IGN. King took to Bluesky to set the record straight, stating, “Contrary to the Internet (which usually is never wrong), I am NOT writing for Mike Flanagan’s DARK TOWER.”

Earlier on Monday, IGN reported that King would be collaborating with Flanagan on the TV series and even creating new content beyond the source material. When asked about his role in the adaptation, King mentioned, “All I can say is it’s happening. I am writing stuff now and I think that’s all I want to say because the next thing you know, I’ll stir up a bunch of stuff I don’t necessarily want to stir up yet. I’m in process right now, and to say too much feels like a jinx.”

While King has previously contributed new material to adaptations of his works, like the revised ending in 2020’s The Stand miniseries, it seems that his involvement in The Dark Tower adaptation might not come to fruition. The specifics of King’s current writing endeavors remain unclear following his statement to IGN.

Despite King’s absence in the writing process, fans can still look forward to the Dark Tower series under Flanagan’s guidance. Flanagan has established himself as a skillful adapter of King’s works, evident in his successful adaptations of Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep. Additionally, Flanagan has more King projects in the pipeline, including a film adaptation of The Life of Chuck releasing in May and a Carrie TV series in development at Amazon.

Update (Feb 24): King’s denial of involvement in the Dark Tower series has been reflected in this updated story.
