Future PlayStation games could have AI-powered characters, if this leaked prototype of Aloy is anything to go by

Leaked AI-Powered Character Revealed at Sony Interactive Entertainment

Speculation arises as leaked footage from Sony Interactive Entertainment showcases an AI-powered character that may hint at the future of PlayStation games.

A video shared by X user Oliver Darko reveals a presentation by Sharwin Raghoebardajal, a director at Sony Interactive Entertainment, highlighting an AI prototype developed with the help of Guerrilla Games for PlayStation Studios Advanced Technology Group.

The footage demonstrates Raghoebardajal interacting with an AI-powered Aloy from the Horizon series, utilizing OpenAI’s Whisper speech-to-text tech, Sony’s Emotional Voice Synthesis, and large-language models like GPT-4 and Llama 3 to power AI Aloy’s decision-making.

While the prototype showcases some hurdles, such as slower responses and stilted speech, it provides a compelling glimpse into how AI technology could enhance gaming experiences.

“This is just a glimpse of what is possible,” remarked Raghoebardajal, as reported by The Verge.

Concerns about generative AI potentially replacing human voice actors and writers in the gaming industry are valid, but based on this demonstration, it seems that AI is not yet capable of matching the quality delivered by human development teams, especially in AAA games.

However, there is potential for utilizing AI in creating spin-out games or virtual experiences within the Horizon universe, similar to Horizon Call of the Mountain’s showcase for PSVR 2 features.

Imagining an experience where players interact with AI-powered characters in Horizon settings, providing information and insights, could be an exciting possibility for future gaming experiences.

Sony’s experimentation with AI is still in its early stages, and while widespread implementation may not be imminent for PS5 games, the possibility of AI playing a significant role in PlayStation games, perhaps in the era of the PS6, is not far-fetched.
