Rainbow Six Siege X update detailed, as game goes free-to-play

Ubisoft has unveiled the upcoming changes to its popular team-based shooter in the highly anticipated Rainbow Six Siege X update – promising the most significant transformation the game has seen yet.

Scheduled to release on June 10th, the update will introduce Dual Front, a new six-versus-six mode featuring area control gameplay on a fresh map called District.

Rainbow Six Siege X will mark a shift towards a free-to-play model, offering access to Dual Front, Unranked, and Quick Play modes, along with the opportunity to “earn up to 26 operators through progression”, according to Ubisoft.

Ranked Mode, Siege Cup, and additional operators will be included in the game’s premium editions following the launch of the update.

In addition to these changes, classic maps such as Clubhouse, Chalet, Border, Bank, and Kafe will receive a visual overhaul, with three more maps set to be enhanced in each upcoming season.

These updated maps will feature “up to 4K” textures, destructible items, improved rappel navigation, and enhanced audio cues for a more immersive gameplay experience.

To combat cheating, Rainbow Six Siege X will introduce a new anti-cheat system called R6 ShieldGuard, aimed at providing live security updates to deter cheat creators.

For players interested in trying out the new Dual Front mode, a closed beta is currently live until March 19th, available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. However, access to the beta requires watching content creators play on Twitch to earn an invite – more details can be found on Ubisoft’s website.

The announcement of Rainbow Six Siege X coincides with Ubisoft’s strategic focus on leveraging its strengths, including the popular Assassin’s Creed franchise, amid ongoing efforts to streamline operations and explore potential acquisitions.
