Analyst apologises for mistakenly claiming Final Fantasy 16 sold 3.5m copies

Analyst Apologizes for Incorrect Stat on Final Fantasy 16 Sales

An analyst who previously claimed that Final Fantasy 16 had sold 3.5 million copies has issued an apology, clarifying that the figure was an estimate and not based on confirmed sales data.

Toyo Securities analyst Hideki Yasuda has revisited the firm’s report to stress that the mentioned figure was derived from their own estimates and was not provided by Square Enix.

Genki on Twitter/X (via TheGamer) shared, “Toyo Securities analyst Hideki Yasuda has apologised for his incorrect statement about Final Fantasy XVI sale figures!”

The updated Japanese-language report now acknowledges the mistake, stating, “The original article stated that the number of copies Final Fantasy 16 [had sold] was stated by Square Enix president Takashi Kiryu during the financial results briefing, but this was based on Toyo Securities’ own estimate and was an incorrect statement by the author.” The report concludes with an apology and a correction.

Square Enix has not disclosed specific sales figures for Final Fantasy 16. While they initially described the sales as “extremely strong” a month post-release in June 2023, they later admitted that the sales fell short of expectations.

Recent news revealed that the Final Fantasy series has surpassed 200 million copies sold worldwide, solidifying its status as one of the best-selling video game franchises. Despite a decline in sales in recent years, the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series alone has achieved over 5 million copies sold globally.
