SCS Software, known for developing American Truck Simulator and Euro Truck Simulator 2, is currently focused on adapting both flagship titles for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. CEO Pavel Sebor stated, “this is really one of the biggest projects we’ve ever undertaken.” Significant technical adjustments have been in progress for more than five years; however, it’s crucial to temper expectations about when these new versions will be available. Producer Jakub Mraz shared in a recent developer video, “At this point, we are sure that the games are not coming out in 2025 on the new platforms. The concrete release date will be decided as we go, based on internal playtests, on evaluations, on how performance is doing. Ensure that people actually get a great game when they eventually buy it on these platforms.”
Mraz expressed his passion for the games, noting, “I kind of felt that the game belongs onto the big screen and onto the console systems. I took it as my personal goal to get us onto the new platforms where I think the games will shine,” reflecting his vision for the console experience.
Overcoming Development Challenges
The journey to bring these games to consoles hasn’t been without obstacles. Mraz pointed out that most studios involved in console ports typically have either an experienced publisher or staff members with console expertise. In contrast, SCS had to navigate many of these hurdles independently. Pavel Sebor indicated that the initial technical upgrades necessary for modern platforms began “over five years” ago. Co-owner Petr Sebor elaborated, stating, “Our engine was not at all prepared to run on multiple processors simultaneously many years ago. So there was quite a bit of rewriting involved. The scope, in terms of the number of people involved, is really quite large. And we’re really scraping the bottom now to get it done on time.”
Looking Ahead
Although the console versions are still in the works, SCS has plans for what lies ahead post-release, including “hidden cards” waiting to be revealed. Mraz remarked, “We realize that people will be intrigued into hearing about the future updates and all the additional features that might be coming to the game down the line after the initial release,” though specifics remain under wraps for the moment.
