On March 19, the creators of American Truck Simulator, SCS Software, shared a brief yet intriguing teaser video filled with engine sounds, sparking intense speculation among fans. Fast forward nearly four weeks, and the developers have confirmed that the video was a hint for a new initiative dubbed “Road Trip,” designed to allow players to explore the open roads behind the wheels of everyday cars.
The developers expressed in their announcement post, “Previously, we have indicated our desire to broaden player interactions with the game universe – not just by driving Class 8 trucks and transporting freight but also by navigating that environment through various vehicles and experiences.”
“Road Trip signifies a move toward this goal,” they continued. “Once launched, it will enable players to appreciate the impressive landscapes of ATS not solely from the cabin of an 18-wheeler but also from behind the wheel of, for instance, a robust pickup or even a sporty coupe. We anticipate that this new viewpoint will appeal not only to longtime players but also to newcomers discovering the world of ATS for the first time.”
The announcement showcased several work-in-progress images featuring different vehicles. The developers emphasized that the project is still “in the early stages” of development, but they are already brainstorming new gameplay mechanics aimed at fostering exploration. One of the initial ideas is an “exploration journal,” which will allow players to unlock themed postcards as they progress.
Having engaged with ATS intermittently since its launch in 2016, I find the title most enjoyable as a road trip simulator. Its 1:20 scale map effectively captures the essence of traversing the United States, and the prospect of doing so without the added pressure of timely deliveries of hefty cargo is incredibly appealing.
Importantly, SCS Software is not diverting its focus from the trucking aspect of American Truck Simulator, as the team has “assembled a dedicated group” specifically for the Road Trip initiative. While I’m passionate about driving 18-wheelers across America, I find myself thinking that this could potentially be the ultimate evolution of the game.
