The future looks promising for democracy in the universe of Helldivers 2. Key figures behind this multiplayer shooter have been sharing their visions for what’s ahead for our super soldiers on the frontlines of liberty, and there’s a lot on the table, including an accelerated pace for narrative chapters. Johan Pilestedt, the creative director of Helldivers 2 and CCO at Arrowhead Game Studios, took to Twitter recently to talk about this brainstorming session. “With the directors, talking about Helldivers 2 next four arcs,” he tweeted, alongside a snapshot of the development leads enjoying a meal together.
Amid the comments—many of which were light-hearted suggestions—one fan quipped that at this rate, it might take over three years to see four arcs materialize.
In response to the community’s concerns, Arrowhead’s creative lead acknowledged the players’ feedback, highlighting the game’s ups and downs by saying, “It’s a never-ending ping pong between ‘it’s so over’ and ‘we’re so back,’” but reassured fans that “we’re trying to get better with each update.”
Looking at the future, Pilestedt expressed optimism about the frequency of updates. “We’ll deliver a bit more often than that. Especially now that we are in a better technical space,” he mentioned, acknowledging that larger updates had become less frequent this year due to resources being dedicated elsewhere in Helldivers 2.
The team has been busy tackling months of patches, hotfixes, and a slew of changes, which led to some ‘feature decay.’ This caused performance hiccups and an increase in the game’s file size. However, Arrowhead is focused on stabilizing the experience while also working on reducing the overall storage required, which means we can expect even more entertaining content—like finding innovative ways to die while battling relentless waves of enemies.
Currently, the team is zeroing in on the lava worlds of Into the Unjust after dispatching the Gloom of Oshaune. Whatever comes next, you can be sure of one thing: there will be some kind of caped reward involved.
Excitingly, Arrowhead is also purportedly developing a roguelite mode that fundamentally shifts gameplay, promising new challenges and experiences for players.
