Christopher Grilli, a seasoned writer at Ubisoft with a notable history in the world of Assassin’s Creed, has stepped back into the limelight as the lead scriptwriter for the highly anticipated next chapter in the series, known internally as Hexe. Grilli shared the exciting news on his LinkedIn, stating: “I’m thrilled to share that I’m starting a new position at Ubisoft Montreal as lead scriptwriter on Assassin’s Creed: Codename Hexe. Incredibly grateful to be a part of this team and project!”
Grilli’s journey with Ubisoft began in 2016, with his first significant contribution being to Assassin’s Creed Origins. He advanced to the role of lead writer in 2021, but departed the studio in 2023 to explore writing opportunities with other companies. Now, he’s back at Ubisoft full-time, diving back into the world of Assassin’s Creed, where he’s clearly found his passion.
Hexe is shaping up to be a pivotal entry in the Assassin’s Creed lineup, marking a tonal shift from its predecessors. Although gameplay details remain under wraps—we’ve only seen a teaser trailer since its reveal back in 2022—early reports, especially from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, hint at a darker, witch-themed RPG set in 16th-century Europe. This period in history, particularly the infamous witch trials, will serve as a backdrop for the game’s narrative.
While there’s no official word on Hexe’s release timeline, considering that it was announced nearly four years ago, fans are hopeful for an update soon. With the anticipation building, one can’t help but wonder how this new direction will reshape the franchise.
“We are hard to beat”: Reflecting on Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the associate director has emphasized the importance of parkour, suggesting it should take center stage as a key element of the series going forward.
