It seems that the debate surrounding Battlefield 6’s weapon modes is far from settled. Following its summer beta, the player community has expressed strong preferences regarding the Open Weapons and Closed Weapons options. Many players have repeatedly voiced their dissatisfaction with the Open Weapons format, claiming that the Closed Weapons mode was not adequately showcased.
In response, EA has presented its findings: data indicates that most players, after experiencing both modes, preferred to continue with Open Weapons—a feature that permits the selection of any weapon irrespective of class. A community update released in anticipation of Battlefield 6’s launch on October 10 underscores this sentiment, declaring, “the vast majority of players, after trying both playlist types, chose to stick with Open Weapons.” DICE’s lead producer, David Sirland, remains steadfast in supporting this direction, defending the decision through a series of tweets, despite the continued pushback from fans who argue that Closed Weapons was effectively obscured.
DICE Defends Open Weapons Amidst Fan Concerns
With just three days to go until Battlefield 6’s official release, DICE makes one final appeal in the Open versus Closed weapons discussion: “Open Weapons is the right path forward for Battlefield 6.”
The changes in the Battlefield 6 beta have been a topic of polarized opinions. While adjustments such as movement tweaks and shotgun nerfs have generally been welcomed, concerns persist regarding the small scale of Rush mode and the sustained focus on Open Weapons as the default.
Active Work on Balancing and Player Feedback
According to a producer for Battlefield 6, the team is “actively working on” achieving a balance for vehicles but maintains that the implementation of open weapon classes “isn’t really a problem.”
YouTuber DANNYonPC chimed in on Twitter, pointing out, “Makes sense if you hide the closed weapon playlist, and only have ONE of them compared to the 3 or 4 different open ones,” in response to EA’s assertions about the advantages of Open Weapons.
Sirland clarified, “We normalize for placement impact, of course. That’s a given in any data comparison. We did measure placement impact across the beta on all tiles as you may have noticed.” He also noted that the arrangement of tiles frequently changed to provide insights into how variations in tile placement influenced the pick rates, comparing single modes against playlists featuring multiple modes. The final verdict? Open Weapons remain as the default choice.
