It’s been over two years since Bethesda Game Studios unveiled Starfield, and aside from the Shattered Space DLC, updates have been pretty sparse. Yet, that may be shifting soon, fueled by rumors making the rounds on the internet. Back in August, Tim Lamb, a seasoned vet from Bethesda, hinted that the team was hard at work on enhancements to the space RPG’s travel system. Fast forward to now, and various content creators have started to share whispers about a “behind-closed-doors” event where future changes for Starfield, potentially in the form of an update or DLC, were discussed.
YouTuber and streamer Luke Stephens has chimed in, detailing his findings in a thread. “To be clear, as far as I have been able to find, there’s only one source for this alleged event. The claim is: it was a behind-closed-doors event where they showed the 2.0 version of Starfield, but no one was required to sign an NDA. Despite that, no one else is talking about it, and there are no specifics on what was shown,” he noted.
In a follow-up, he added, “Maybe it did happen, but I would take this with a massive boulder of salt at the moment.” Some individuals who claimed to be present at the event or part of its organization have reached out to him, and they shared similar sentiments: temper those expectations. Improvements are being made, but from the sounds of it, this isn’t shaping up to be a Cyberpunk 2.0-level update.
Stephens likely draws a parallel to the substantial 2.0 update for Cyberpunk 2077 that dropped in 2023, which was quite significant to say the least. Others in the community also took to discussing the alleged news, with YouTuber JuiceHead adding, “I’ve seen lots of talk about the Starfield ‘event’ popping up all of a sudden—not really an event.”
JuiceHead wasn’t done, though. “What I can say is, last month Bethesda Game Studios gave me (and others) an opportunity to see some of Starfield’s future content. I can’t say more yet, but I will talk about it.” In a follow-up comment, he expressed enthusiasm about Starfield’s future.
Meanwhile, Windows Central has jumped into the fray, reaching out to individuals with “first and second-hand knowledge” about the rumors. They seem to have garnered some insight, stating that Starfield might feature a future devoid of annoying loading screens during travel, with a flight system that could resemble the one in No Man’s Sky. The Creation Engine, too, has reportedly received significant enhancements to facilitate these functionalities. But that’s not where the speculation ends—a supposed Nintendo Switch 2 release is also mentioned, though this remains just conjecture at this point.
Ultimately, nothing is confirmed until Bethesda makes an official announcement or holds a reveal event. Until then, I’ll be crossing my fingers for any news on The Elder Scrolls 6—the real RPG the studio’s working on (just a jest for all you space enthusiasts out there).
