Bethesda on Fallout 4’s Protagonists: A Necessary Shift in Gaming Design

When you think about the range of protagonists in Bethesda’s catalogue, Fallout 4’s Nate and Nora aren’t the typical blank slates many gamers have come to expect. With a backstory and voice acting, they come pre-packaged with a personality that offers a glimpse of who they are before you make your choices. This design decision, however, still stirs up debate among fans. Emil Pagliarulo, the RPG’s lead designer, sheds light on the reasoning behind it in a conversation with GamesRadar+.
“It didn’t seem as controversial as it ended up becoming,” Pagliarulo reflects, hinting that the industry’s norms played a big part in this decision. He notes that when Fallout 4 released back in the fall of 2015, voiced protagonists were becoming the norm in AAA games. “You had to keep up with industry trends,” he explains. “We wanted to convey different emotions through the protagonist, and voice acting allowed us to express that depth.”
Moving forward to Starfield, it’s clear Bethesda has taken fan feedback on board. “In hindsight, we realized fans preferred an unvoiced protagonist,” Pagliarulo admits. “So we decided: let’s give the fans what they want.” This shift seems to reflect a more responsive approach to game design and player preference.
Despite the ongoing discussions, Fallout 4 has certainly made its mark. Bethesda reported that the RPG sold 12 million units at launch alone. And with a successful Amazon series currently airing its second season, it’s safe to say that the game continues to thrive in popular culture.
