Fallout Fans Eagerly Await Bethesda’s Next Move
As the second season of Fallout pulls fans deeper into the world of New Vegas, the gaming community is buzzing with speculation about the future of the franchise. Despite the relative silence around Fallout 5, Game Informer decided to dig into the minds of key developers regarding their aspirations for this beloved series.
Emil Pagliarulo, studio design director at Bethesda, shared his thoughts on what the next installment should deliver. “I would be happy with a game that is as successful as the previous Fallout games that continues to give fans what they love,” he said. His vision includes a rich narrative and engaging systems, aiming for a gaming experience that keeps players hooked for not just 20 or even 100 hours, but for 200, 300, or even 600 hours. “That’s the kind of games we make,” he added.
If there’s one hallmark of Bethesda’s creations, it’s those seemingly endless playtimes. Personally, I’ve dropped countless hours into Oblivion and can’t even count the number of hours I’ve clocked in other titles from the studio. Whatever direction Fallout 5 takes, managing expectations around the sheer scope and replayability is crucial, especially considering how expansive Fallout 3, New Vegas, and Fallout 4 are.
Exploring the wasteland often leads players off the beaten path, allowing for countless side quests that frequently overshadow the main storyline. To be honest, I can’t say I’ve fully wrapped up the central quest in any Fallout title. Sure, I tackled the main plot in Oblivion, but that took a whole lot of grinding through the game’s vast world.
Pagliarulo is also keen on evolving the series, focusing on quality-of-life upgrades that players might not even realize they’re missing. He reminisced about the original Oblivion, noting, “people forget in the original Oblivion, you couldn’t sprint. So, of course we’re going to add that in the Oblivion remaster.”
He wrapped up his thoughts in a way that resonates: “The industry moved on, and so, we want to move on with it.” For fans of the franchise, it certainly feels like an exciting time ahead.
Bethesda’s leadership has acknowledged the disappointment surrounding the absence of a Fallout 5 release alongside their latest series, stating simply, “it’ll do great when it gets here.”
