Mark Darrah, a longtime veteran at BioWare and a key figure behind the Dragon Age series, recently shared his thoughts on the state of the gaming industry. In a new video, he emphasized that indie developers are the ones truly pushing for innovation in gaming, especially in an era where AAA titles often play it safe. Darrah believes that with massive corporations dominating the market, indie teams are stepping up to offer fresh experiences simply because they don’t have the same budgetary power as their larger counterparts.
“Video games are much more than simply AAA,” Darrah stated. “We have a large indie space, and indie has shown an ability to innovate and to explore and to try new things. A lot of indie development is exploration because it’s much more difficult to exploit. You can’t really make a looter shooter with a team of two people and a $50,000 budget when you’re up against giants like Destiny, who vastly outspend you.”
He went on to explain how the survival of indie games often hinges on their willingness to experiment. “So, just to survive, you have to explore other parts of the space,” he added. “You might just be exploring a looter shooter with a couple of asterisks on it, but you’re still going to be looking for what else can be done. There has been a lot of innovation coming up through indie, but I would argue that the big AAA developers should be doing this as well.”
In another segment, Darrah tackled the issue of soaring budgets and the resulting homogeneity in AAA games. He posited that this might be making players more open to products generated by artificial intelligence, indicating a shift in what consumers are willing to accept.
With all this in mind, it seems wise to keep an eye on the upcoming indie titles set to roll out in 2026 and beyond.
