Guillaume Broche, the creative director behind Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, believes that while the game achieved much, it only reflects about “85% of my original vision.” He expressed a desire to explore more with the popular character Esquie in future iterations. “Don’t worry,” he reassured fans, “it’s something that we might want to do later.”
In an interview with PCGamesN, both Broche and COO Francois Meurisse discussed their thoughts on the game’s development and its performance, despite its impressive sales of 5 million copies. Broche shared, “I think we had this discussion with the team. We are [at] like 85% of my original vision with the final game, which is a very impressive number compared to what usually happens in games.”
Future Possibilities for the Franchise
Broche emphasized that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is just “one of the stories that we want to tell in this franchise.” He asserted that “the only way” to truly succeed is by disregarding the first game altogether.
To commemorate the sale of 5 million copies, the team is planning a significant update for Expedition 33. This upcoming patch will introduce new locations, additional late-game bosses, and more exciting features. “We hope the update we’re working on will act as a ‘thank you,'” they noted.
Development Reflections
Meurisse added that witnessing the game’s success and how audiences embraced it is “120% of whatever I could have dreamed of as a game maker.” In terms of the development process, Broche mentioned that he has “no big regrets” with the game’s creation but expressed a desire to have included more content involving Esquie. “It’s something that we might want to do later,” he hinted. “But overall I think we are all pretty, pretty happy with where we ended up.”
Whether Esquie’s expansion will come in the next update remains uncertain. However, indications point towards a significant enhancement. Recently, it was revealed that the upcoming update will feature a whole new location, more late-game bosses, and additional content. Fans might anticipate a mix of intrigue and surprises.
Regarding potential accolades, Sandfall commented that winning Game of the Year “isn’t something we aim for,” noting that while it would be a “nice little bonus,” they are primarily supporting the game Megabonk.
