Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 – Insights from Sandfall Interactive’s Success
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a title that truly resonates with players, especially when you peel back the layers and uncover the influences behind its creation. The developers at Sandfall Interactive, known for their love of classics like Final Fantasy X and Lost Odyssey, crafted something that not only pays homage but also forges its own identity.
Guillaume Broche, the game’s director, reveals a key insight into the game’s success: “I think the secret is to adapt the game to the team you have, and not the other way around.” This approach is refreshing; it emphasizes passion over procedure. He elaborates, “It’s not about processes; it’s about making a game that you want to play. It’s contradictory, but [try to] not care too much about the players because if you care about your game, it means you care about the players ultimately.”
In line with this authentic storytelling, lead writer Jennifer Svedberg-Yen shared her perspective on the creative process. She noted the collaboration among the team was instrumental in shaping the game’s narrative and art: “I think the pieces really work together because we really let ourselves be influenced by each other. Art influenced story, story influenced art, music influenced story and art – there’s a lot of cross-pollination of ideas.” Through this dynamic exchange, she feels that “the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.”
Interestingly, Svedberg-Yen approached her writing not strictly as crafting an RPG. Instead, she mentioned, “I thought of it almost like writing an HBO drama,” hinting at the depth and emotional weight embedded in the game’s storylines.
As the industry continues to evolve, it’s evident that Sandfall Interactive remains committed to their vision, unaffected by the whims of sales or accolades. They aim to create experiences that resonate—something players can connect with on a deeper level.
