After nearly 25 years since its initial launch, the beloved JRPG Breath of Fire 4 has made a comeback, thanks to the determination of 23,000 dedicated fans who advocated for its revival.
GOG, the digital storefront operated by CD Projekt, recently revealed that a new collection of classic games has been introduced to its platform as part of its initiative for game preservation. This initiative previously featured re-releases of iconic titles, including the original three Resident Evil games, both installments of Dino Crisis, OG Diablo, and F.E.A.R. from Monolith Productions.
Now available on Good Old Games are Ultima Underworld 1 and 2, Ultima 9: Ascension, Worms Armageddon, Robin Hood: The Legend of Sherwood, Realms of the Haunting, Tex Murphy: Under a Killing Moon, Stonekeep, and the highlight of the lineup: Breath of Fire 4 for PC.
Interestingly, Capcom’s cherished yet often overlooked turn-based series distinguished itself during a highly competitive era for the genre. However, the games were never major financial triumphs, leading the publisher to shelve the series for an extended time. Currently, players can access the first two entries on SNES with a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, but locating copies of Breath of Fire 3 and 4 is a challenge unless you can source a PS1 at high prices for the classic titles.
Why does Breath of Fire 4 receive a release on GOG while the others do not? This is primarily because it was the only title in the series with a limited PC release in the early 2000s, easing the process for GOG since they lack the legal authorization to port the SNES and PS1 games entirely to new systems. Moreover, 23,000 gamers rallied for its return through GOG’s Dreamlist program, allowing players to influence which games are preserved.
For those unfamiliar, GOG’s preservation efforts aim to ensure “convenience and compatibility with modern systems, even when the original developers no longer support the games.” Each title is made available DRM-free, enabling players to enjoy them without requiring an internet connection or specific launch applications.
Breath of Fire 4 on GOG features both English and Japanese localizations, comprehensive support for most modern controllers, enhanced mini-games, upgraded rendering options, and a wealth of additional features for $10. There is hope that the success of this release might prompt Capcom to consider developing a full remaster similar to the recent collections of Suikoden or Lunar.
