Danganronpa 2×2: Not a Remake, But a Fresh Take on a Classic
Kazutaka Kodaka, the mastermind behind the beloved Danganronpa series, recently clarified to GamesRadar+ that his upcoming project, Danganronpa 2×2, is anything but a remake. Instead, the iconic creator—also known for the ambitious 2025 strategy RPG The Hundred Line—emphasized that this new title is “a game that is not a remake of Danganronpa 2, but rather uses the characters in a new story and a new scenario in a new setting.”
While both Danganronpa 2 and Danganronpa 2×2 feature students journeying to the tropical paradise of Jabberwock Island, their narratives are not directly the same. Some familiar elements are evident, like the irresistibly charming yet sinister teddy bear, Monokuma, who compels players into another round of chaotic, deadly competition. But, make no mistake—this will present an entirely new experience.
“We hope we’ll be able to see the fans enjoy those characters in the new, updated version of it,” Kodaka added, reiterating that Danganronpa 2×2 is a “retelling” rather than a simple remake. He also shared how working on this series once more has been a source of nostalgia: “To be able to work with the characters from 10 years ago and to bring them back into the new setting that they’ll be able to be used in, it’s definitely a nostalgic feeling. It brings back memories when I’m able to continue working on it.”
So, call it a comeback if you wish, but just steer clear of referring to it as a remake. By the looks of it, Danganronpa 2×2 promises to be an exciting reimagining for franchise fans.
Meanwhile, Kodaka’s upcoming title The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy may not align perfectly with the mechanics of games like Persona or XCOM, but it stands out as a delightful option for those looking to indulge through their Steam Deck.
