Death Stranding is set to be adapted into a movie, which might seem peculiar to those familiar with the game, as it already has a cinematic quality unlike any other. The film is being developed by A24, with Michael Sarnoski, the director of A Quiet Place: Day One, set to lead the project. Notably, Hideo Kojima has endorsed him.
In a discussion on his radio program, Koji10, Kojima shared insights regarding the film, as relayed by Genki. According to their translation, he described Sarnoski as “smart, has good taste, and is a very nice person,” expressing his contentment over Sarnoski directing the adaptation. Kojima added that the director “doesn’t seem like the typical Hollywood type,” noting that he has played both Death Stranding and the first Metal Gear Solid title, although Kojima advised him against playing the sequels.
Hideo Kojima says the Death Stranding live-action film with A24 will be an unbelievable and strange film! He says Director Michael Sarnoski is smart, has good taste and is a very nice person so is happy he can direct the film. He says Michael properly played…– Hideo Kojima
It remains uncertain why Kojima chose to prevent Sarnoski from experiencing the latter Metal Gear games. Perhaps he intends for the director to develop his own unique vision of the narrative instead of mimicking Kojima’s style. This could reflect a significant act of trust and an indication of admiration. Alternatively, it might simply point to Kojima’s appreciation of varied interpretations, which could provide him with insights he might not have considered previously.
Notably, engaging with Death Stranding seems like an obvious choice for Sarnoski, as well as experiencing Metal Gear Solid to gain a deeper understanding of Kojima’s perspective. It’s possible Kojima believed the Metal Gear series is too distinct from Death Stranding, thus preferring that Sarnoski doesn’t lean toward a more action-oriented approach in his interpretation.
