Bungie recently unveiled an exciting four expansions for Destiny 2 during their latest showcase, with the first one, The Edge of Fate, set to launch the “multiyear” Fate Saga on July 15. The second expansion, titled Renegades, is scheduled for release on December 2, 2025, and garnered significant attention due to its unique Star Wars theme, thanks to a collaboration with LucasFilm Games.
Destiny 2 fans who are also Star Wars enthusiasts were understandably enthusiastic about this announcement. However, some players, including my clan member and colleague at PC Gamer, Tim, expressed concerns that this collaboration might dilute the essence of Destiny 2 in pursuit of commercial success.
While previous collaborations, such as with Baldur’s Gate and various whimsical cosmetic items, showed that crossover events are not uncommon, the question remains: has Destiny 2 started to adopt a Fortnite-like approach? Notably, this announcement comes after the addition of armor sets inspired by Darth Vader, General Grievous, and Kylo Ren in the Year of Prophecy Ultimate Edition, alongside prior offerings, including a Stormtrooper outfit.
Bungie has also been focused on revitalizing Destiny 2 following a significant drop in weekly active users, which plunged more sharply than any period since 2018. They assembled a dedicated team to tackle this situation, recognizing the urgency for action.
Addressing Community Concerns
In response to player apprehensions, assistant game director Robbie Stevens reassured fans via Twitter, saying:
“Rest assured, Guardians – everything in Renegades is in-canon for the Destiny universe, but we’re leaning into the aesthetic, tone and vibe of Star Wars to tell a Destiny story with Destiny characters.”
This aligns with Bungie’s earlier statement regarding Renegades, which emphasized that it will be “a Destiny story at heart, but with a Star Wars-inspired take that’s been a dream for us to explore.”
Stevens directly addressed worries about potential crossover characters, responding to concerns such as Twitter user Matthew Rehwoldt’s, who humorously remarked, “I don’t mind inspiration/vibe but if Boba Fett shows up as an NPC I think I’d eat my hat.”
For fans concerned that Destiny 2 could be overshadowed by another intellectual property’s identity, only a thorough reveal of Renegades, expected in September, might truly ease these fears. There’s a possibility that this issue boils down to semantics, and the September presentation could help alleviate apprehensions. However, the presence of Darth Vader within the Tower raises questions about the direction of this expansion. Could perhaps a more original space Western theme, which still echoes hints of Star Wars, have alleviated this ambiguity? After all, this could diminish the excitement surrounding the LucasFilm connection.
