Modern online games often feel like a mixed bag for me. I dig the battle royale format, but, man, I’m really not great at those multiplayer shooters. Enter Fall Guys, a refreshing twist that let me flex my platforming skills instead. Now, I’m thrilled to hear about Scramble Knights Royale, which promises some exciting, royal battles in terrain I’m much more comfortable in—Zelda-style action-adventure!
This title was revealed a while back—you might have caught a glimpse during a recent Day of the Devs showcase—and it’s slated for release later this year. But the excitement doesn’t have to wait; a playtest is set for this weekend, from January 9 to January 11, and you can sign up right now over on the game’s Steam page. If you’re curious about what’s in store for the playtest, head over to the official FAQ. However, a heads up: it’s currently limited to North America.
One of the most striking aspects of Scramble Knights Royale is its adorably charming art style. It reminds me of the Link’s Awakening remake and Echoes of Wisdom, but it cranks up the claymation aesthetic, showcasing characters that look like they’ve been playfully kneaded by hand.
In each match, 32 players will drop onto an island (via turtleback, of course) and set off to uncover their own individual quests. There are treasures dotting the landscape and dungeons filled with monsters to tackle—all of which will enhance your character ahead of showdowns against other players, with the ultimate aim of being the last knight standing.
It seems like an intriguing twist on the traditional battle royale formula, and I can’t wait to see how players respond to this first playtest. It’s a tricky time to roll out a multiplayer title that hinges on a solid player base, but here’s hoping Scramble Knights Royale can carve its niche within the crowded battle royale scene.
