Larian Studios is clearly keeping an eye on mod creators, especially when it comes to refining user interface elements for their upcoming CRPG, Divinity. Following last month’s intense debut trailer and a wave of debate surrounding generative AI, the studio hosted an online AMA to dive into everything Divinity-related—from cooperative party sizes to the nitty-gritty of D&D constraints.
In response to whether the team was looking to the modding community of Baldur’s Gate 3 for fresh ideas, design lead Nick Pechenin stated, “we’re taking notes on all of the UI mods for sure.” It seems that Larian is keen to integrate the best mod concepts into their next installment.
It’s interesting to note that the enthusiasm for Baldur’s Gate 3 hasn’t waned. The game still occupies a spot in Steam’s top 20 two years post-launch. So, Larian took a moment to extend their gratitude to the modding community: “Give yourselves a pat on the back, have a shot of whiskey,” they said, acknowledging the vital role mods play in keeping the RPG alive and fresh.
During the AMA, Pechenin highlighted that the UI team behind Baldur’s Gate 3 labored diligently to translate the complexities of an open-world D&D experience into a video game format. However, as is often the case in creative endeavors, some promising ideas didn’t make the final cut. “We had more improvements in mind that we just couldn’t cram into our releases,” he admitted. “Happy we managed to make UI moddable in the first place.”
So if there are any Baldur’s Gate 3 mods you simply can’t play without, chances are Larian Studios has taken notice and may look to integrate those concepts into Divinity officially.
It’s no surprise that Larian zeroed in on UI mods during their AMA. On NexusMods, one of the most downloaded mods for Baldur’s Gate 3 is, predictably, a UI enhancement mod, racking up nearly eight million downloads. And just like many players, Larian also expressed a desire for deeper connections among companions, something they’ll aim to develop further in Divinity.
