Netflix has been making significant strides in the gaming sector with its acquisitions of various studios and the expansion of its streaming app to include a diverse range of playable titles. Recently, it was reported that the company had also shut down a AAA game studio, which had a team composed of veterans from acclaimed titles like God of War, Overwatch, Halo, and Gears of War. According to Netflix’s gaming lead, Alain Tascan, the rapidly evolving game industry suggests that younger audiences may not have their sights set on future consoles like the PlayStation 6.
During a discussion at the Game Developers Conference last week, which was attended by various industry professionals, Tascan was questioned about the potential for Netflix to delve into console game development. He responded by indicating the company remains “open to opportunities,” but he expressed uncertainty regarding the tangible “advantage” of creating games for traditional console platforms.
“The right person to consult isn’t me. Just look at the younger generation. Are eight-year-olds and ten-year-olds preoccupied with the idea of a PlayStation 6?” Tascan queried, concluding with, “I have my doubts. They seem more inclined to engage with any interactive digital screen, no matter what or where it is, even in a car.”
Tascan expressed his fondness for consoles but noted that they can “limit your perspective,” leading to associations with high-definition graphics and controllers. He cited significant changes in the industry, including the rise of 3D graphics, mobile gaming, social gaming, and games as a service, stating, “It evolves. Clinging to this older model could hold us back. While I hesitate to quote Marshall McLuhan on ‘the medium is the message,’ it could very well apply to us. If we broaden our thinking, I believe that’s where intriguing developments will arise.”
Following the closure of its AAA game studio, comprised of talent from God of War and Overwatch, Netflix has announced a “new initiative” driven by artificial intelligence.
