The Nintendo Switch 2 boasts enhanced capabilities compared to its predecessor, allowing it to handle larger and more visually demanding games. Previously, such titles on the original Switch often appeared as ‘Cloud Versions.’ Fortunately, if you choose to purchase a Switch 2, that won’t be a concern any longer. However, there is another aspect you should be aware of regarding some titles for the Switch 2.
Certain games for the Switch 2 might only be accessible through a “Game Key Card.” Although these cards are tangible cartridges, they do not hold the entire game within. Instead, they function more like a key, enabling you to digitally download the complete game while still allowing you to insert the cartridge into your console to launch the game. In essence, it’s a digital game presented in a physical form, rather than a traditional physical edition.
Regrettably, some titles on the Switch 2 will embrace this format. For instance, it has been confirmed that Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition will be offered as a Game Key Card in regions like Asia and Japan. While it’s yet to be officially stated for other markets, it’s a reasonable assumption that this may be the case. It also seems likely that Elden Ring won’t be the sole Switch 2 title utilizing this method, although for the moment, Nintendo appears to refrain from adopting this approach for its own releases. Should that change, updates will be provided.
