Last week, the team over at Zenimax Online, the studio behind The Elder Scrolls Online, unveiled its 2026 roadmap. They’ve decided to move away from those massive annual expansions that fans have come to expect and are instead opting for smaller, seasonal updates every three months. This isn’t entirely new territory—Rare, another Xbox Game Studios developer, shifted Sea of Thieves in a similar direction a few years back. However, with the haunting aftershocks of last year’s brutal layoffs at Microsoft still lingering, one can’t help but wonder: why now? After 11 years, what’s prompted this shift?
While there’s no clear-cut answer to that question—Zenimax Online suggests it’s all about offering “greater choice and variety”—ESO executive producer Susan Kath insists that this change isn’t a reaction to Microsoft’s downsizing, which heavily impacted Zenimax and even led to the cancellation of their first new project in over a decade, titled Blackbird.
“Seasons is not in any way a response to that,” Kath shared with Rock, Paper, Shotgun. “We kicked off the Season work at least 12 to 14 months ago. We started making the changes in the team to move in this direction, knowing that this was our intent.”
This certainly seems plausible. While it’s possible for studios to pivot quickly, it feels like the decision to embrace a seasonal model was likely on the table well before Microsoft’s layoffs impacted Zenimax. You’d think that streamlining a studio’s workforce might hinder online game development, but Kath noted that since the cancellation of Blackbird, the entire team is now focused solely on Elder Scrolls Online, rather than being stretched across multiple projects. It’s a silver lining in a rather bleak situation, but a silver lining nonetheless.
“In some capacities, we actually increased the number of folks available as we came out of that because they weren’t managing two products anymore. They were only devoted to one title,” said Kath.
The first seasonal update, titled Season Zero: Dawn and Dusk, is set to kick off from April 2 to July 8. It promises to introduce “a new kind of zone experience” while laying down the foundation for future seasonal content. Exciting times ahead for Elder Scrolls Online fans!
