The much-anticipated release of Final Fantasy 14 on the Nintendo Switch, or possibly the Switch 2, is still on the horizon. During a recent talk with fans, director Naoki Yoshida hinted at the potential ports, although specifics remain scarce. Every year, around New Year’s Day, Yoshida takes time to address player inquiries on the Japanese FF14 servers. It seems that one of the hot topics during this latest informal chat was the idea of bringing Square Enix’s beloved MMORPG to Nintendo’s handheld consoles. Judging from his comments, development for this version appears to be in progress.
When pressed about a Switch release, Yoshida stated: “As for Switch, please wait while looking forward to it.” This translation was provided by Genki on Twitter, a known translator for Japanese game coverage, who shared insights from Umadori0726.
While it seems Final Fantasy 14 isn’t quite ready to make its debut on the Switch 2 just yet, dedicated fans of the iconic Square Enix MMO have already managed to experience it on Nintendo’s popular 2DS/3DS consoles.

That comment certainly feels quite definitive, but it’s always a good idea to take these translations of live responses with a pinch of salt. Still, it definitely suggests that a port could be on the way, though there’s no additional information available at this time. Further promotions might depend on a timeline set by Nintendo and Square Enix.
If and when Final Fantasy 14 lands on Nintendo’s devices, there will likely be a targeted direct as part of a broader campaign to generate excitement. At this point, it’s reasonable to assume it’ll be available on both Switch and Switch 2, but until we get more clarity, it’s all speculation.
Bringing such a massive game to these platforms will undoubtedly be a monumental task. The team will need to navigate numerous in-game elements while ensuring account synchronization works smoothly within a different ecosystem. Luckily, Yoshida and his crew have never shied away from a challenge, so we’ll be keeping a close eye on developments.
Final Fantasy 14’s Yoshi-P was inspired by mobile RPGs to lift glamour restrictions: “If you look at any of these games, you won’t really see the same restrictions on fashion that FF14 has.”
