While FromSoftware titles are immensely satisfying, many players experienced frustration navigating the Blighttown area in the original Dark Souls. Known for its challenging roll-dodging mechanics, this aspect of the game has become infamous — albeit endearingly so in the world of memes. However, in their forthcoming game for Nintendo Switch 2, titled The Duskbloods, the studio is enhancing the movement dynamics.
In a recent Creator’s Voice blog post, renowned director Hidetaka Miyazaki provided insights into the game, mentioning that the vampiric faction known as the Bloodsworn “draw upon extraordinary powers granted by special blood,” promising players a way to bypass the cumbersome platforming elements of the past. (Here’s hoping).
Miyazaki elaborated, “Basic actions like sprinting, super jumping, and double jumping are designed to feel fluid and effortless, paired with each character’s distinct weapons and abilities that encourage inventive play.” Rather than creating custom characters, players can select from a list of approximately twelve pre-designed but customizable avatars.
In alignment with the rich narratives typical of FromSoftware’s titles, there is a lore-driven explanation for the heightened agility of the Bloodsworn. “The members of the Bloodsworn have gained superhuman traits through the influence of special blood,” stated Miyazaki. “Conceptually, they share similarities with vampires, yet they diverge from the grotesque depictions often associated with classic vampire folklore. Moreover, the environment of the game features firearms and ranged combat options, ensuring all characters have access to distance attacks. I believe this adds a distinctive layer to the gameplay when compared to our previous projects. It is my hope that players will appreciate these new action mechanics.”
Interestingly, The Duskbloods features a whimsical “elderly gentleman” rat, showcasing FromSoftware’s rare venture into a more “Nintendo-inspired” and “adorable” aesthetic.
