FromSoftware, the studio behind Dark Souls and Elden Ring, is diving deeper into multiplayer gaming with its recently unveiled title, The Duskbloods.
The Duskbloods emerged as a standout announcement during the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct event. It’s hard to imagine I would see a Nintendo-exclusive game from FromSoftware, let alone one that connects to the ambitious Elden Ring: Nightreign project.
For those unfamiliar, Nightreign is designed as a three-player multiplayer experience (solo play is an option, but pair-play isn’t permitted). In a similar vein, The Duskbloods is a “PvPvE-based multiplayer action game” accommodating up to eight players, as stated in a post on FromSoftware’s website (translated via Google). While I personally have a bit of a grudge against extraction shooters, believing titles like Escape from Tarkov, Dark and Darker, and Hunt: Showdown have filled that niche, I am intrigued by the emerging direction FromSoftware seems to be taking.
Multiplayer has been part of the Dark Souls experience for a long time, and the entire Soulsborne lineup has embraced multiplayer heavily. Although Elden Ring began to blur those lines, Nightreign took significant steps to erase them. Now, The Duskbloods marks a fresh intellectual property that leans entirely into multiplayer, reminiscent of Bloodborne but with a more explicit focus on cooperative gameplay. This isn’t just a side feature like in Elden Ring; it forms the very backbone of the game. This represents a bold new venture for the prestigious studio, and I eagerly anticipate how it unfolds.
