Games Done Quick (GDQ) is set to delight fans once again with a new twist: Games Done Queer. This vibrant speedrunning event has already made waves, raising over $11,000 on its second day alone, showcasing impressive runs in games like Diddy Kong Racing, Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze, and even demonstrating how to prepare hot dogs at astonishing speeds.
The full schedule for Games Done Queer kicked off on October 31 and will continue until November 3. The event has already witnessed a remarkable speedrun of Diddy Kong Racing, with one player going so far out of bounds that they were effectively barrel rolling through empty space. Another talented streamer showed off their culinary skills in the horror cooking simulator, Kiosk, preparing hot dogs and burgers with impressive speed.
Upcoming Highlights
Upcoming runs include titles such as Hi-Fi Rush, Rift of the Necrodancer, Sonic Adventure, Deltarune, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Untitled Goose Game, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (likely a test of how quickly players can skip Fi’s dialogue), and Halo: Combat Evolved. You can catch all these thrilling events live on Twitch.
Supporting a Worthy Cause
All funds raised during Games Done Queer will benefit Lambda Legal, a dedicated organization advocating for the legal rights of LGBTQ+ individuals in an increasingly challenging climate across the USA. Event organizer Rae Brusky expressed the necessity of combining fun and a good cause, stating, “It’s been pretty tough recently, so we’re getting together for a good cause, but also having fun. And I think those two go together, and both halves of that are really important.” She also acknowledged the feeling of insecurity in many areas of the country. Brusky hopes this weekend serves as a much-needed respite from ongoing struggles.
A notable moment in the speedrunning community occurred recently when a Super Mario Bros competitor broke their own world record for the third time this year, coming just 11 frames away from achieving the ultimate perfect run in the 40-year-old classic.
