Gearbox Is Working on a Bigger Borderlands 4 Update, Focused on Loot Balance

Gearbox is gearing up for a more substantial update for Borderlands 4 following the recent smaller weekly refresh. Associate creative director Grant Kao reassured players that no nerfs are on the immediate horizon. In a response to an X/Twitter inquiry about potential “buffs and nerfs,” Kao stated, “Avoiding nerfs at the moment.” He continued, emphasizing their commitment to expanding the range of new gear with upcoming content drops. “I wholeheartedly want to avoid ruining someone’s countless hours of farming.”
An example of this philosophy is the infamous “Bod,” a legendary shotgun that also counts as an assault rifle, sniper rifle, pistol, and submachine gun. Its versatility allows it to benefit from various weapon bonuses and skill triggers, but it’s a bit too potent at the moment due to unforeseen scaling interactions. However, Gearbox is letting it roam free—for now, at least. Kao revealed that the Bod will be made easier to find, as it’s being moved from the low drop percent tier to a primary drop tier: “to help players farming for the unique gun.”
The Borderlands series, especially Borderlands 3, has had its fair share of balancing issues over the years. Many players vocalized their disappointment during the launch of Borderlands 3 when nerfs became a hot topic. Borderlands 4 recently faced similar complaints after adjusting drop rates following an event. It turns out loot goblins aren’t just a breeze to manage, and nerfs in a PvE game can feel like a kick to the gut—even if they are meant to maintain game balance.
Kao’s approach of allowing players to unleash their hard-earned loot while reserving the right to intervene later seems sensible. Players find joy in crafting devastating builds, but it can be frustrating when balancing tweaks hit just as you finally snag that dream weapon. There’s a fine line, though: when balance gets too skewed, it risks boxing out diverse builds and can even diminish fun.
In another post, Kao elaborated that, “One change I can speak to is an increase of multiple percentage points for dedicated loot drops scaling with [Ultimate Vault Hunter] levels.” If you’re on the Ultimate Vault Hunter train, it looks like there will be easier targeted loot in your future. This all seems tied to “some large adjustments” expected at the end of January.
