Hades 2: Navigating Change with Supergiant Games
As Hades 2 approaches its final release, developer Supergiant Games acknowledges that letting go of some Early Access features might be tough for fans. However, Creative Director Greg Kasavin encourages players not to get too hung up on what’s missing. In fact, some of those elusive Boons are still part of the game—it’s just that they’ve evolved. “In the case of Smithy Sprint,” Kasavin shared with GamesRadar+, “we aimed for something simpler and more user-friendly for one of the main Boons provided by the god of the forge. As part of that transition, we’ve integrated the concept of keep-sprinting-for-a-big-blast into the Black Coat weapon’s Aspect of Nyx. So, be sure to check it out if you haven’t yet! I really enjoy using it myself. There are times when ideas for Boons and abilities find new places to shine!”
This is the essence of Early Access game development. Kasavin elaborated that Supergiant continuously “iterated on a variety of content throughout Early Access, shaped by our experiences and goals.” The aim was to craft “some truly powerful abilities and combinations that could lead to those memorable, breakthrough runs where players achieve victory.” But, of course, it doesn’t always go that smoothly.
“At Supergiant, I think we’ve grown to appreciate the journey towards our end result,” Kasavin reflected. “Sometimes, compelling Boon ideas or great lines of dialogue undergo significant changes, but we believe it’s crucial not to hold too tightly to these elements if they don’t fit into the broader, cohesive vision we’re cultivating.”
“The game is the design document,” he adds. Supergiant operates without “long, detailed” plans that dictate the future of their projects, as their approach is fundamentally iterative. With Hades 2 reaching version 1.0, the studio is gearing up to “return to the shadows for a while and plan our next move.”
