The Evolving Endings of Hades 2: A Reflection on Player Feedback
If you’ve been diving into Hades 2 since its Early Access launch, you might’ve come across two distinct ‘true’ endings: one revolving around Melinoe and the other centered on Zagreus. This latter version emerged following a patch, a direct response to the insights players shared with developer Supergiant. “Our post-launch patch was created in response to player feedback,” explained Greg Kasavin, creative director at Supergiant Games, in an interview with GamesRadar+. “Just like its predecessor, Hades 2 was designed for Early Access development from the ground up, making player feedback a core part of our process.”
This evolution mirrors another key theme of the roguelike: the passage of time, and the impacts it has even on divine beings. “Hades 2 is also a game that dives into the effects of time—concepts around various outcomes and the alternate paths that could have been taken, as well as what it means to move forward after setbacks,” Kasavin elaborated.
The recent changes to the climax of Hades 2 stand as a testament to personal canon. If your initial encounter was the Zagreus ending and that resonates with you more, that’s your narrative. Conversely, if Melinoe’s storyline feels more fitting, then embrace that one. There’s a sort of philosophical elegance here, even if it stems from Supergiant’s desire to let the project evolve.
“We were careful about how we approached these themes when enhancing story details based on player feedback,” Kasavin noted. “All the narratives in our games are reflective of the experiences we share while developing them.”
All in all, Hades 2 stands as another remarkable addition to Supergiant’s roster, capturing the enchanting essence of its predecessor while refining nearly every aspect. Will we witness another true ending in the future? While it’s hard to predict what’s next, there’s a certain excitement in what tomorrow may hold.
