Hideo Kojima delighted his fans with a plethora of thrilling announcements last night, featuring a first glimpse at an enigmatic new augmented reality project developed in collaboration with Niantic, the mind behind Pokémon Go. Among these reveals was an unsettling trailer for his upcoming horror game, titled OD. From the looks of it, followers of Kojima’s creations are in for a treat.
Not only does OD appear to be more petrifying than ever in its latest trailer, but Kojima himself claims that this title will have players so frightened that they might… well, soil themselves. Yes, you read that correctly. Speaking at the “Beyond the Strand” showcase celebrating the 10th anniversary of Kojima Productions, the legendary figure within the horror genre declared that OD will be “truly terrifying.” In fact, he hinted that the game could lead to unexpected bathroom emergencies.
“It’s not a game about lighting candles,” Kojima remarked through a translator, alluding to elements like matches and candle lighting featured in the teaser. “Don’t misunderstand that. I can’t divulge too much about the matches, but rest assured, it’s incredibly frightening. You might actually have an accident.” This statement recalls what he said in 2014 regarding the ill-fated Silent Hills project, which he described as frightening enough to provoke similar reactions.
Following the success of Death Stranding 2, Kojima noted that OD will be “something completely different,” assuring fans that they would either “love it or despise it.” However, he left the final assessment hanging, suggesting that the true judgment will be rendered “10 or 20 years from now.”
Kojima also reflected on past comments, where he humorously suggested that the initial idea for a game was one that would make players pee their pants. But after further contemplation, he expressed that the goal had shifted to creating a game that would compel players to “poop their pants.” This isn’t the first time he has made such bold claims. After the cancellation of Silent Hills, he shared his aspirations for a future horror game that could evoke the level of fear he envisioned for the project.
“P.T. ended up being just an experiment, but I aspire to design another horror game someday,” Kojima reminisced, referring to his acclaimed Silent Hills demo. “Something that employs a groundbreaking approach to terror—not just inspiring players to pee their pants, but to truly scare them into soiling themselves. I have plenty of ideas brewing.” Could OD potentially be that “another horror game”? Given the continuous discussions about fear-inducing experiences, it certainly appears that way.
While Silent Hills may remain forever unrealized, OD seems poised to deliver the bone-chilling horror experience that has been brewing in Kojima’s imagination for quite some time. Only time will tell if it actually lives up to the claim of making players poop their pants.
