Hideo Kojima Clarifies Metal Gear Solid 2’s Message: It’s All About Digital Society
In a recent conversation with Wired Japan, the iconic game designer Hideo Kojima addressed a prevalent interpretation of Metal Gear Solid 2, firmly stating that the game should not be viewed as a narrative primarily about AI. Instead, Kojima emphasized that it’s really a commentary on the evolving nature of society in the digital era.
“MGS2 is often mistaken for a story about AI, but it’s about digital society,” Kojima explained. He elaborated that while the first game focused on DNA and the shift from analog to digital, the sequel dives deeper into how our lives transform in a digital landscape. He likened this to contemporary social media, where everything is continuously archived—“Even graffiti remains without deteriorating.” He noted how the internet acts as a comprehensive network that connects people everywhere, allowing for immediate exchange of opinions. “MGS2 explored what human life would become then,” he added.
Interestingly, he stressed that the game wasn’t centered on AI itself but instead on “interweaving digital data gaining a will of its own.” Sadly, this fictional vision of the future feels alarmingly close to our present reality.
Kojima also weighed in on the topic of generative AI. He views the technology more as an ally, one that can “boost efficiency” while allowing him to retain full creative control. “I’d like AI to handle the tedious tasks that would lower costs and cut down on time,” he mentioned, illustrating his pragmatic approach to the emerging tech. He even elaborated on his aspirations for future projects, asserting he hopes to “pioneer a new genre,” keeping his creative spirit alive amidst the advancements in technology.
As the gaming landscape evolves, Kojima remains a compelling voice, offering insights not just into his creations but into the broader implications of our increasingly digital lives.
