The minds behind Hitman are well-versed in crafting imaginative gadgets. Known for their inventive approach, they have created scenarios where players can don a chicken suit or eliminate foes using unconventional items like exploding rubber ducks and, well, a fish. Now, IO Interactive is channeling that same creativity into the gadgets for the forthcoming title, 007: First Light.
This insight comes from Andreas Krogh, the gameplay director for 007: First Light, who spoke with PC Gamer. He emphasized the team’s goal to make Bond’s arsenal of occasionally lethal devices “more than just gimmicks.”
Diving Deep into Gameplay
In a comprehensive gameplay showcase earlier this summer, we witnessed the rising secret agent navigating thrilling car chases, executing precise headshots, and employing charm to solve various dilemmas. A standout feature is Bond’s ability to harness Agent 47’s ingenuity when treading hostile grounds. Notable gadgets include a futuristic laser watch, which can incapacitate foes or cause chandeliers to crash down, as well as smoke bombs and other tools like a lighter that players can leverage strategically.
Innovating Weapon Mechanics
Krogh revealed that the development team has set high ambitions for 007: First Light, referring to their endeavor to deliver “the best weapon-handling we have done to date.” Unlike in the Hitman series, where ranged combat tends to be a last resort, this game pivots toward a more action-oriented approach.
For the team at IO Interactive, working on 007: First Light feels like a return to their roots, as James Bond has long served as a significant source of inspiration. They aim to ensure that each gadget in the game is practical, engaging, and invites replayability.
Krogh stated, “Our goal is to make every gadget not only feel grounded and enjoyable but also versatile enough to cater to various gameplay styles. We want each one to stand out, both in design and function, ensuring players have an extensive toolkit tailored to their approach.”
007: First Light is set for release on March 27, 2026, across multiple platforms, including PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and the Nintendo Switch 2.
