The indie developer behind Pico Park: Classic Edition has unexpectedly turned ten years of revenue generation into a permanent free offering of this beloved platformer. Oops? In a blog entry titled ‘Pico Park: Classic Edition is permanently free!’, Tecopark, the developer, shares that the decision comes not from a celebratory event, but rather due to an oversight.
“I intended to move to a paid plan after enhancing the online support,” the developer explains, adding, “but I forgot that switching from a paid plan to free means I can never revert back to a paid option!”

- These indie developers made their co-op roguelite available for free for a day—two million users claimed it, and it has now relaunched at $5, supported by the studio behind Deep Rock Galactic.
- A solo developer crafted a brief free game in six weeks, unintentionally capturing the Steam algorithm’s favor and earning $4,200 in just five days. They quickly prepared a major update, stating: “It seems people appreciate my honesty and the fact that there are no hidden costs.”
- “Steam rejected the build” at the final step, pushing developers to undergo three intense months of crunch, finishing the game just days before its release: One developer navigated the path to a horror hit that “accidentally” sold 150,000 copies.
Despite losing one revenue stream, the developer chose to pivot their focus, suggesting players explore additional offerings: “If you enjoy this free version, make sure to check out the series (PICO PARK, PICO PARK 2) as well.” This is certainly a suggestion worth considering. The Pico Park series stands out as an engaging co-op platformer filled with adorable cats that must stack or arrange themselves to complete levels. The newly free Classic Edition accommodates up to ten players.
The Classic Edition boasts ‘Mostly Positive’ ratings based on over 1,800 user reviews, while recent feedback leans towards a more favorable ‘Very Positive’ score. This uptick is likely due to the generosity of users who appreciate the free offering. Meanwhile, the 2021 release of Pico Park maintains its leading position with around 9,200 user reviews, averaging a ‘Very Positive’ rating. It’s not free, but at £4/$5, it offers excellent value for your money.
