It seems Larian Studios isn’t shying away from dark or adult themes in their upcoming RPG, Divinity. For anyone who’s been around the buzz of Baldur’s Gate 3, this might come as no surprise. While the debut trailer lays out this ambitious tone with all its gory visuals, Larian’s CEO, Swen Vincke, notes that the content isn’t all that shocking when you think about it—it’s the sort of thing you’d expect to see on HBO or Netflix.
After the thrilling reveal at The Game Awards, we caught up with Vincke to dive into the creative mindset behind the trailer. It’s clear they were keen on making a strong first impression—after all, you only get one shot at that.
“The shock factor wasn’t really a focus for us,” Vincke explained, emphasizing that what was showcased aligns with themes found in other forms of mature storytelling on platforms like Netflix and HBO. “We aimed to create a game for an adult audience—one that respects players as intelligent individuals.”
While the trailer holds elements that might feel distinct in the gaming world, it’s actually pretty typical of what Larian has brought to the table with Divinity. The biggest shift this time, however, is a more cinematic approach to storytelling. “We wanted to ensure that players understood they’re getting the essence of what we did previously, but presented in a more filmic way,” he said, underscoring how the world portrayed isn’t overwhelmed with fantasy but grounded in a way that feels relatable.
Vincke also pointed out that the trailer embodies an “aspirational” vision for the game, showcasing exactly what the team hopes Divinity will achieve. This emphasis on darker themes is intentional; the idea is that you need to explore the depths before players can feel truly heroic about their choices.
Although Divinity doesn’t have a concrete release date or window just yet, it sounds likely you won’t be left waiting too long. Larian appears enthusiastic about potentially following an Early Access model once again. This could mean even more immersive experiences ahead.
More Insights: Vincke stated, “Baldur’s Gate 3 and Original Sin 2 serve as blueprints for Divinity,” suggesting that this next RPG is a logical progression in the studio’s two-decade journey.
