In anticipation of the launch of Pokemon Legends: Z-A, the series has been hit by a substantial leak, with over 70GB of confidential information surfacing. This leak, referred to as ‘Freakleak,’ began to circulate over the weekend and reportedly includes a full Pokedex for the upcoming game. Additionally, in-development versions of the title have emerged, alongside various insights about the broader development process.
To put the size of this leak into perspective, it’s nearly ten times the size of the actual game itself. Game Freak has confirmed that the file size for Pokemon Legends: Z-A is 7.7GB, making this data breach significantly larger. As we close in on the game’s release date of October 16, it’s unclear how much of this leaked information pertains to the final version of the game.

Nintendo has faced challenges with major leaks for some time now. The infamous ‘Gigaleak’ of 2020 revealed source code for several older games, prompting a reassessment of the company’s security protocols. Unfortunately, in 2022, significant leaks for Scarlet and Violet occurred, primarily due to retailers breaking the games’ street date.
Speculation suggests that this recent leak may be linked to an incident from October 2024, where the ‘Teraleak’ included employee information and was acknowledged by Game Freak. Online chatter indicates that this leak encompasses details related to Legends: Z-A as well as upcoming Generation 10 games set to release next year. It appears the leakers intended to wait until this information became pertinent, raising the possibility of similar incidents as we approach the next-gen titles, which are believed to align with the franchise’s 30th anniversary in 2026.
As someone keen on shiny hunting, my excitement for Pokemon Legends: Z-A is cautiously optimistic. However, I sincerely hope the RPG avoids repeating some of the significant missteps made in Scarlet and Violet.
