Bungie has officially stated that players will not need a PSN Account to enjoy Marathon on PC and Xbox, especially after last year’s issues with Helldivers 2.
Since its announcement in May 2023, Marathon has remained largely under the radar, with the only updates hinting at difficulties and multiple internal delays. However, optimism is rising as a gameplay showcase is scheduled for April 12, nearly two years post-reveal. While specific details are still limited, we’ve learned a significant piece of good news: Marathon will avoid the major blunder that plagued Helldivers 2.
Recall that last summer, Helldivers 2 was building considerable buzz as it prepared to be one of the standout games of 2024. Suddenly, it was revealed that players would need to link a PSN account for PC gameplay, sparking considerable backlash that forced Sony to backtrack. Although Arrowhead eventually recovered from this misstep, the studio’s CEO described the backlash as “the lowest point during my tenure so far.”
Fortunately, Bungie has committed to a different path, as indicated by their Discord server announcement regarding Marathon. The team reassured players: “Marathon will not require a PlayStation Account for players on PC and Xbox.” This is particularly noteworthy, considering that PSN is accessible in only 70 countries, leaving numerous regions, particularly in Africa, unable to connect.
On another note, it seems that Nintendo is making some questionable moves as well; the $70 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will not include any DLC for the eight-year-old game.
