Almost three years back, Pen Sir—a devoted Old School RuneScape player, Twitch streamer, and YouTube content creator—set out on an ambitious quest to collect unopened reward caskets earned through clue scrolls, those scavenger hunt-like minigames. With a staggering 10,000 clue caskets accumulated, he stands on the cusp of release, ready to crack them open and unleash a torrent of dopamine into his gaming life. His announcement that he’d finally reveal the long-awaited haul on January 3 sent ripples through the OSRS Reddit community. The excitement sparked by a screenshot showcasing a mountain of caskets is hard to ignore; it’s reminiscent of someone meticulously preparing to topple a monumental domino setup over the years.
In an exclusive chat with GamesRadar+ leading up to this moment, Pen Sir humorously remarked, “When I click ‘Time Played,’ the game just tells me to touch grass…”
Pen Sir didn’t initially intend to hoard all these caskets. He started this journey with dreams of winning an event hosted by his in-game clan, which ultimately fizzled out. Despite that setback, his collection flourished. Remarkably, he reveals that he’s only accidentally opened one casket throughout this journey—though he did suffer a distressing loss of 80 due to a PvP mishap. “Don’t afk in the Wilderness,” he advises, a nod to the game’s notorious PvP dangers.
“It’s been years since I’ve opened any clues, and I’m genuinely excited for it,” he reflects. “The past couple of nights, I’ve barely slept, juggling just one or two hours of shut-eye with the anticipation of finally opening them.”
For Pen Sir, working through clue scrolls on his Iron Man account—where trading is off the table—requires patience and dedication to hunt down rare items. But it’s also a chance to accumulate Collection Log points, representing a player’s true progress in a game that eschews conventional victories. With any luck, he’s aiming to add about 500 new items to his collection, particularly boasting in hopes of snagging the elusive and highly sought-after 3rd Age armor.
“I know most people hate this item—but I would love to get 3rd Age vambraces,” he admits. “Wearing such a rare item without others noticing feels like the ultimate flex to me. Beyond that, I’m also hoping to score some cool dusk mystic pieces, dragonstone armor, and the evil chicken outfit!”
As he gears up to open his prize vault, Pen Sir describes the feeling as “surreal.” The long-awaited moment is almost here: “The temptation has been absurd. Running simulations oddly helped me,” he shares. “But I got a bit obsessive about it. I was creating a new spreadsheet weekly to track updated numbers on expected items. There’s this site (oldschool.gg) with a simulator, and I constantly compared my spreadsheets to their predictions.”
While this monumental achievement may seem just that, Pen Sir captures the essence of OSRS’s grind by saying, “I guess everything in OSRS is a long-term grind.” And this is precisely how he chose to immerse himself in the game—a testament to the diverse narratives players create. These clue rewards have mostly been earned passively through typical grinding, but the end result has now culminated in what could be a historic loot shower. Just another typical day in the engaging OSRS subreddit.
