In light of the recent acquisition of Niantic by Saudi-backed publisher Scopely for a whopping $3.5 billion, concerns among Pokemon Go players are increasingly prevalent. Nevertheless, the developers have reassured fans that the mobile game will remain unchanged.
It’s apparent that many fans of Pokemon Go have been preparing for potential negative impacts following Scopely’s takeover. However, Niantic has expressed that there’s no need for alarm. Representatives from the company, in their first public statement since the acquisition, confirmed that “the game’s direction will not see any major alterations due to Scopely’s influence,” as reported by IT Media and Automaton.
Continuing their reassurance, the representatives stated, “They will simply assist in enhancing the game, and we will maintain our approach as we have since the outset.” They added, “To clarify – please be assured that the game will not be discontinued.” Additionally, they noted that the acquisition stemmed from the impressive performance of Niantic games and the positive reviews from the community, leading Scopely to see the value in the games produced by Niantic.
The announcement provides a comforting perspective and follows comments from senior product director Michael Steranka, who disclosed that Scopely “acknowledges how distinctive the game is” and cautioned Niantic, “they would be unwise to alter the components that have contributed to its massive success.” Regarding any concerns about intrusive advertising or restrictions on gameplay duration, Steranka decisively stated, “Definitely no… not at this time, not ever.”
