Nintendo seems to be withholding some intriguing information regarding the upcoming Switch 2 game and the latest chapter in its renowned racing franchise, Mario Kart World. There’s been a hint that “more” awaits discovery in the new Free Roam mode beyond what has been unveiled so far.
Among the key features introduced in Mario Kart World is the Free Roam mode. This exciting addition allows players to explore the game’s vibrant tracks at their own leisure, either alone or with friends, capturing photographs, and soaking in the beautiful details of the diverse environments. This mode offers a refreshing break from the adrenaline-pumping racing segments, and personally, I am quite thrilled about it—pretending to observe traffic laws used to be one of my cherished pastimes in Mario Kart when I was younger. This new mode seems tailor-made for such delightful shenanigans, which I find quite heartwarming (even if I don’t expect many others to share this sentiment).
Regardless, if you’re feeling lukewarm about Free Roam, it might be wise to hold off on your judgments for now. During a segment aired in the second Treehouse: Live stream last week, it was mentioned, “There is more to Free Roam mode than we’re discussing here, so please stay tuned for the upcoming Mario Kart Direct in a few weeks.”
How intriguing! As of now, Nintendo has not provided any further hints about what else Free Roam might entail. Personally, I’m hoping we might see elements reminiscent of Mario Kart DS’s Mission Mode, which offered various challenges to engage with the racing tracks in fresh ways. In that spirit, perhaps there will be special quests to undertake. Mario Kart DS even featured boss battles in unique settings—who knows, we might discover hidden areas that host similar surprises? While this is purely speculative, it certainly feels like the sort of content that could seamlessly fit in.
Fortunately, the wait isn’t too long to uncover more. The anticipated Mario Kart World Direct is scheduled for April 17, and shortly thereafter, on June 5, the game will be released alongside the Switch 2.
