Last year, I had the chance to experience Wave Race 64 for the first time, and I was blown away by how advanced the water technology remains even today. It appears that Nintendo has reignited its passion for wave-based gameplay, especially with the latest Mario Kart World on Switch 2. A freshly released video demonstrates how explosive water effects on the tracks can create new racing opportunities.
In a clip shared by Andre Segers from GameXplain, we witness a blue shell hitting a racer in the water, resulting in a significant shockwave that radiates outwards. This wave’s physical presence can be utilized as a ramp for an aerial jump, allowing for a swift boost trick.
yooo blue shell x water = giant rippling wave. Rad! – @cantworkitout
While it may seem like a minor detail, the kind of dynamic water deformation that actively influences gameplay is still quite rare today. It takes me back to the chaotic fun that technology brought to Wave Race. Let’s hope that this feature goes beyond just blue shell interactions in Mario Kart World.
We are on the verge of uncovering more about Mario Kart World during an upcoming Nintendo Direct this week. However, the initial gameplay showcased during the Switch 2 reveal and various public events has already provided a wealth of information. The game features rail grinding reminiscent of Tony Hawk, a well-designed open-world layout, a diverse roster of characters, and an $80 price point that appears to be testing the limits of what fans are willing to accept. Only time will reveal if it warrants the cost, but thus far, it has certainly made an impressive impression.
Mario Kart World gets my gold medal thanks to the thrilling 24-player Knockout Tour, and I can’t wait for another lap.
