Few anticipated that the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct would introduce Donkey Kong Bananza, marking the character’s first new game in over ten years and his inaugural 3D journey since the N64 era. However, the game’s announcement isn’t the sole surprise. It appears that Nintendo may have inadvertently showcased an unannounced character as a central figure in the game.
(It’s worth noting that there could be some marketing spoilers related to the game, but don’t worry about any significant spoilers regarding the game itself since we will focus solely on its cover art.)
The Nintendo Korea official site presently displays the complete cover art for Donkey Kong Bananza, which depicts a seemingly younger version of Pauline enthusiastically riding and gripping DK’s iconic necktie while he exuberantly pounds the ground below. Interestingly, the reveal trailer for this upcoming Switch 2 title makes no mention of Pauline or any sidekick, and promotional materials to date have solely highlighted DK’s solo escapades.

Pauline, after all, is the iconic damsel in distress from Donkey Kong’s very first video game—an arcade title released in 1981 where Mario leapt over barrels to save her from the now-known villainous ape. Subsequently, she took on the role of mayor in New Donk City during Super Mario Odyssey and has appeared in numerous other recent Mario spin-offs.
This depiction of a seemingly younger Pauline raises significant questions regarding the MarioVerse. Did Pauline and DK share a friendship before he decided to abduct her? Is Donkey Kong Bananza a prequel unraveling the backstory of one of gaming’s legendary characters? Did Mario misjudge the situation when attempting to ‘rescue’ Pauline? Alternatively, could this be a relative of Pauline or a completely new character who is simply enjoying the mayhem? The possibilities are intriguing, and it’s surprising how invested I’ve become in this game’s narrative. (And seriously, where’s Diddy Kong, Nintendo?)
