This week saw the launch of AI Limit, a notable Soulslike title that made its debut alongside The First Berserker: Khazan. While the game showcases a combat style reminiscent of FromSoftware’s works, its creators prefer classifying it as an action-RPG due to features that set it apart from titles like Dark Souls and Bloodborne.
During an interview at this year’s Game Developers Conference, AI Limit producer Yang Bin acknowledged the game’s classification as a Soulslike—an identification that fans have prominently tagged on its Steam page. However, he clarified that this descriptor doesn’t fully encapsulate the game’s intended essence.
“In terms of combat, AI Limit shares elements with Soulslike games, drawing from the traditions of both Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3,” Bin stated. “Nonetheless, we encourage players to explore beyond this aspect. AI Limit is equipped with features like the Sync Rate system, a cel-shaded art style, and a setting in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, which we believe elevates it beyond the label of ‘Soulslike.’ We prefer to refer to AI Limit as an action RPG.”
The discussion surrounding genre definitions can often feel trivial and exhausting, yet it’s essential to respect the creative freedom that Sense Games has in categorizing its work. Bin’s emphasis on the unique Sync Rate system is particularly noteworthy; this mechanic fills and drains based on the damage dealt and sustained by the player character, offering an innovative approach to action-RPG combat that sets the game apart. While AI Limit’s anime style and desolate backdrop may not entirely distance it from the Soulslike genre, its combat mechanics certainly provide a fresh perspective.
