Avowed Set to Launch on PS5, Non-Human Characters Confirmed
It looks like the multiplatform trend is alive and well for Xbox’s first-party studios, and Obsidian Entertainment is joining the fray. In an exciting announcement, the developers have confirmed that Avowed will be hitting the PS5, along with a special anniversary update. This update will allow players to take on the role of non-human characters, a long-awaited feature for fans.
Mark your calendars—Avowed will launch on PS5 on February 17, almost a year following its original release. This date will also coincide with a substantial, free anniversary update that brings a wide range of new features to all platforms, including Xbox, PC, and PS5.
This reveal came during the New Game+ showcase, where we got an in-depth look at some of the updates headed our way. While we heard about fan-favorite additions like New Game Plus and a photo mode, the standout news is the introduction of more character creation options. Players will soon have the opportunity to play as an aumauan, orlan, or dwarf, each offering a unique experience.
In a video presentation, lead character artist Dmitri Berman shared that the inclusion of multiple playable races was something discussed early in Avowed’s development. However, he noted that it was a challenging endeavor. “It’s a lot of work and a difficult thing to really nail down, especially in Avowed with its parkour systems, combat mechanics, and diverse weapon types. Our different races vary in size and shape, so it’s a unique gameplay experience for each one in a first-person context. We simply didn’t have the time to implement it properly before, but now we can finally deliver it to players.”
Although Avowed may not have made the biggest splash in 2025, it’s definitely worth checking out if it slipped under your radar. While it may not reach the storytelling heights of some of Obsidian’s classics, it compensates with truly engaging first-person combat and richly crafted open-world maps that are filled with discovery. There’s a reason it was highlighted as one of the standout titles of 2025.
