Peak’s Latest Update: A Bug Fix and a Sincere Apology
Co-op comedy hit Peak just unleashed a fresh update, and while it squashed a bug that’s been hanging around since the game’s launch this past summer, the developers came clean about a “cardinal sin.” So what exactly did Aggro Crab, known for Another Crab’s Treasure, along with Landfall, the wizards behind TABS and Content Warning, do? According to a revealing patch notes video, “This whole time, the speed at which you climbed chains and vines was dependent on your FPS.” Yep, that’s right—the issue has now been addressed. “This is a cardinal sin for any game developer and very embarrassing for us,” they confessed. And as a reminder, they humorously pointed out, “this whole game was originally a one-month game jam.”
For those who might not be in the know, here’s a little backstory. The team at Aggro Crab faced some serious burnout after working on their underwater soulslike, leading them to team up with familiar collaborators from Landfall in Seoul, South Korea. They cranked out Peak in just four weeks, echoing the swift production of Content Warning, which also emerged from a month-long jam in the same city. It’s safe to say they didn’t see the game’s runaway success coming, which explains how a few pesky bugs managed to slip through the cracks of the code.
But that’s not all! The video update also introduced some intriguing new lore about the character Bing Bong. Turns out, our recently divorced friend is into bbno$ and has been feeling down about the rapper allegedly quitting music. I mean, has no one clued Bing Bong in on the tour happening next year?
In the wake of a few months’ efforts resulting in 11 million copies sold on Steam, the Peak devs are taking a refreshingly honest route: “We’re not going to continually have a graph go up,” they stated. It’s nice to see a development team embracing reality rather than chasing perpetual growth.
