Born from a four-week game jam collaboration between two creative studios, Peak was never meant to become a viral sensation. Co-developers Aggro Crab and Landfall initially didn’t have plans for the co-op climbing game to evolve into a live service, and even with over 10 million copies sold, that intent remains unchanged. In a recent chat with GamesRadar+, Nick Kaman, head of Aggro Crab (the studio behind titles like Going Under and Another Crab’s Treasure), made it clear that the game won’t receive endless updates. Since its unexpected rise in popularity, both studios have been diligently supporting Peak, rolling out features like a winter holiday event replete with snowball fights.
“We’re basically working on it full-time while the rest of our team is busy finishing up Crashout Crew,” Kaman noted. “It’s not going to be a forever game, but we also don’t want to leave anything on the table.” The passionate developers admit they’ve been “running on pure adrenaline” lately, which means players should expect a slowdown in patch frequency and updates over the coming months.
Peak has established itself within the genre, becoming a standout title in multiplayer gaming. However, neither studio foresaw its monumental success—over 11 million copies sold on Steam as of recent reports. Kaman expressed a certain honesty regarding their future approach: “We could milk it for quite a while, but our goal is to reach a point where we’ve done everything we’re excited about, and after that, it’s on to the next adventure!” It’s a breath of fresh air to see developers prioritize creativity and player experience over endlessly expanding for profit, which has become somewhat of a norm in the industry.
Especially considering the struggles faced by Aggro Crab last year, it’s intriguing to see what innovative ideas they might pursue next. Keep an eye out for more indie titles; you won’t want to miss a single release.
